    Skutatoi

Once the pride of the Roman army, infantry is now relegated to a secondary role.   Given the predominance of cavalry in this army, the slow moving Byzantine skutatoi rarely see action.   The battle is usually decided one way or another before the spearmen even see the enemy.   These figures were bought separately and are authentic 15mm Essex Maurikian foot.   So at least the foot contingent of my army is historically correct.

This army was one of my earlier painting jobs - no shading or washing here!   Still, I had fun with the shield patterns.   I also used to paint eyes on my 15mm men.   Learning that a flesh wash automatically shades eye sockets eliminated that particular painting chore.
